New York Mets vs San Deigo Padres

The New York Mets travel west for a four-game set against the San Diego Padres. Back in June, the Mets swept the Padres in the Big Apple. Will the Padres return the favor?

New York Mets

The Mets currently sit five games above .500 with a record of 66-61. New York is only 1.5 games behind there NL East rival for the final wildcard spot.

During the first half of the season, the playoffs did not look likely for the Mets, again. But since getting swept by the Dodgers on May 29th they have gone 44-28 to climb back into the playoff race.

The Mets will send Luis Severino to the mound this evening.

Severino Season Stats

  • 8-6

  • 3.91 ERA

  • 117 strikeouts

  • 1.22 WHIP

  • 17 home runs

Road Stats

  • 3-4

  • 4.85 ERA

  • 59 strikeouts

  • 9 home runs

Severino is having a decent season but not CY Young worthy. He is coming off a nine-inning shutout but at home and against the Marlins. Before that his prior three starts he gave up four, four, and six earned runs.

San Diego Padres

The Padres have been attempting to make a run the last few years and it looks like it may finally happen. After finishing the first half of the season with a mark of 50-49 they have gone 22-6.

The Padres have a record of 72-56 and are tied for the top wild-card spot with only four games behind the Dodgers for first in the AL West.

The Padres will send Dylan Cease to the mound this evening.

Cease Season Stats

  • 12-9

  • 3.46 ERA

  • 186 strikeouts

  • 1.02 WHIP

  • 17 home runs

Home Stats

  • 5-5

  • 3.17 ERA

  • 87 strikeouts

  • 7 home runs

Cease had a streak from mid-July until the first week of August where he only gave up one run over five starts. Since then he has given up a combined five earned runs, with a homerun each start over his last two starts. The starts were against two of the NL’s worst teams, the Marlins and Rockies.

Official Pick

When it comes to baseball I tend to bet the first five. With starting pitchers, it is easier to predict what will happen.

The Official Play

Over 3.5 runs F5 (-132)

Yes this is juicy and yes Cease is on the mound but I think it is too low. The Padres score an average of 4.5 runs per game at home while giving up 4.6 runs. The Mets score an average of 5 runs per game on the road while giving up 4.7 runs.

These teams can and will score combined with Severino’s recent struggles and Cease giving up home runs lately I think there will be at least four runs in the first five innings.
